Oroville is a city located in the northern bulk of the Okanogan Highlands in north-central Washington, United States. Oroville is a member municipality of Okanogan County, Washington, situated between Omak and Penticton. The population was 1,686 at the 2010 census.
Oroville is a small town with a big town amenities. Everything you need and every professional you just have to have is right here in Oroville. We have two grocery stores, three hardware stores, 6 gas stations, 14 churches, 10 restaurants and many gifts shops and pharmacies.
Oroville Washington is four miles south of the Canadian Border on Highway 97. The many orchards in the valley floor are shrunk in comparison to the rugged rock cliffs of the Okanogan highlands. There are a ton of outdoor things to do in our area including camping, fishing, boating and multiple water sports. During the winter months there are opportunities for snow sports of various kinds. In our surrounding area there are hiking, biking and horseback trails, such as the Similkameen Trail, Whistler Canyon Trail and a vast amount of ATV trails. In addition, there are museums to visit, local wineries for wine tasting, and there is a challenging and scenic 18-hole golf course.
"Oro" was the original name in 1892 named after the surrounding gold mines and the gold panning and dredging that still goes on today in the Similkameen River. The name was changed to "Oroville" in 1909. Gold faded into farming tomatoes and apples and now cherries, grapes, and other. Oroville is at the west end of the Okanogan Highlands, a region known for its rolling hills of forest and natural meadows. Oroville is at the east end of the Similkameen River which cuts its way into the Canadian Cascades for another 100 miles and flows into Okanogan river just south of town.
